THE Trinidad and Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association (TTSIDA) is requesting a meeting with Police Commissioner Gary Griffith to discuss issue of theft within the industry.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, TTSIDA stated that it has taken note of media reports that manhole covers in Chaguanas were being removed to be sold as scrap. The association also stated that it has received reports of stolen Petrotrin scrap being sold to foreign entities.
TTSIDA stated, “The association and its members will not purchase or accept any stolen scrap from these individuals who are seeking to tarnish the reputation of the scrap iron industry and the good work this Association has been doing. TTSIDA has complained about stolen scrap being sold to foreign buyers which is which is beyond our control. It is our understanding that stolen Petrotrin scrap was being sold to these foreign entities.”
TTSIDA added, “TTSIDA once again strongly condemns this more recent act and urges Scrap yards not to encourage such activities by purchasing stolen scrap from criminals.”
The association added that it was pleased, that Minister of Finance Colm Imbert acknowledged the importance of the industry in his Budget statement and that it will continue to play an important role in the removal of non-biodegradable materials from the environment.
