1,800 Tickets, 13 Guns Seized Over Easter Weekend

THIRTEEN firearms were seized by police officers over the Easter weekend.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) in its summary report for the extended holiday weekend stated that as various operations and anti-crime exercises were conducted throughout all ten policing divisions.

The exercises, the TTPS stated, were by no means cosmetic in nature, but were strategically planned and executed, which in turn resulted in the arrest of 64 persons for various offences and the seizure of the illegal firearms and narcotics. The TTPS said that 15 persons were arrested in connection with the firearm seizures.

Four of the 13 guns were seized in the Central Division and included one pistol, one revolver and two shotguns. 

Police also seized  17.57 kilogrammes of marijuana and 74 grammes of cocaine.  The largest marijuana seizure occurred in the Tobago Division, where officers seized 8.48 kilogrammes of marijuana, and one suspect was arrested.

Almost 2,000 tickets issued to motorists  

The TTPS also stated that 1,844 tickets were issued to motorists.

The majority of violations were for speeding, as 498 tickets were issued and 21 drivers were arrested for exceeding the prescribed breath alcohol limit.

Reports also indicate that there were 371 seatbelt violations, while 119 motorists were ticketed for driving without requisite insurance.

  1. TTPS must also tell us how many home invasion and homicides were committed during this time. This will allow us to determine if the TTPS is allocating a scare resource….intelligent officers effectively and efficiently
