POLITICAL leader of the United National Congress (UNC) Kamla Persad-Bissessar celebrates 11 years since becoming the country’s first female prime minister today (May 24, 2021).
The UNC through its public relations officer Dr Kirk Meighoo on Monday issued greetings on the occasion.
He said, “On this day 24 May, 2010, 11 years ago, our country elected Kamla Persad-Bissessar who, along with her dynamic team and overwhelming mandate, created history by becoming the first female Prime Minister as well as leading a government which had tremendous social reach, and was responsible for unprecedented levels of development in every sector in Trinidad and Tobago.
“Up to today, Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s vision and programmes continue to impact positively at this critical moment in our history. We remain resolute that her tremendous influence and leadership in Trinidad and Tobago continues to unfold to the benefit of all.”
Despite having lost several consecutive elections, general, local and by-elections since 2015, the current Opposition Leader Persad-Bisessar continues to be elected as leader of her party.
She has previously pledged that as long as her supporters and UNC loyalists want her to lead, she will continue to do so to the best of her ability.
Persad-Bissessar is also the first female attorney general and the first female opposition leader in Trinidad and Tobago and the first woman to chair the Commonwealth of Nations.
