THE opposition United National Congress (UNC) is calling on Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to call elections now.

It made the call in a media release on Friday after the “the recent spate of violence in the country.”

The UNC said it was alarmed over the situation said the country was stunned.

It stated:

Like the rest of the population, the United National Congress is alarmed over the recent spate of violence in the country. This Rowley-led Government has no handle on the situation and has failed to fulfil its responsibility to protect and provide for citizens.

Over the last 48 hours, the country has been stunned by multiple reports of violence. In one case, an alleged attempted kidnapping of two medical doctors, in which one of the victims was killed after the vehicle the kidnappers were driving crashed.

Dr Rudradeva Sharma’s death is disturbing, and this incident raises fears of a resumption in kidnappings in the country, leaving an already beleaguered citizenry in dismay.

Then on Wednesday, another brazen daylight shooting occurred in the capital city, on one of the busiest streets. Several persons were shot and two were killed. Regrettably this morning the country woke to news of another triple murder in Arima.

Now more than ever, our nation is in desperate need of leadership. However, it is clear to all that the Ke ith Rowley Government has no clue how to stop the wave of criminal activity currently engulfing our nation. It is beyond appalling that Rowley also continues to defend and praise the incompetent Stuart Young, under whose watch violent crime has exploded.

The Prime Minister has begged the people of this country, who live in fear of the criminal element, to judge his Government fairly. Given his abysmal performance in every aspect of governance, the people of this country will reject his failed administration when they go to the polls in the General Election.

The people of Trinidad and Tobago want peace, and they want a Government that cares about their needs and has a plan to move the country forward. What we have today is a rudderless Government which has left our nation worse off than it was five years ago. How much more of this can we bear?

The people of T&T deserve better. They deserve a leader and team that has a vision and plan to get our country working again.

A priority of a new UNC Government will be to ensure a safe and secure environment for all citizens.

The UNC urges the Prime Minister to do the right thing – step down and call the election now.
