IT was an epic encounter – it had everything- beautiful goals, wonderful assists, a lot of cards and fights. It was as tense as you could get and as violent as you would want to see a game of football.
Meetings between Argentina and Holland are always explosive and Argentina have not beaten Holland since the 1974 World Cup. Argentina looked to be in complete control with a two-goal lead with seven minutes to go, then it turned chaotic, as it did against Australia.
It was always a high-tempered game which saw 48 fouls, 17 yellow cards and one red. Lionel Messi has become both the youngest (18 years in 2006) to score a goal and provide an assist in a world cup game and at 35 years old, he is also the oldest. Argentina seemed to be in the semifinals but in the 83rd minute Wout Weghorst turned the game. He scored and it became 2 -1. Then, in the 101st minute, he struck again with a wonderfully taken free kick that tricked Argentina.
Suddenly, a sure win was now into extra time. Holland have never scored a goal in extra time and they continued this trend.
Earlier a magical pass from Messi sent Nahuel Molina (35th) who slotted the opening goal. In the 72nd minute, Argentina won a penalty and a cool and calm Messi slotted it in to make it 2-0. It seemed game over at that point but Holland and the wily Louis Van Gaal had other ideas. They changed the play and started sending long balls into the Argentine penalty area. This was after a lot of physical confrontations with the Argentines.
A penalty shootout settled the differences after a 2-2 draw. In front of the 88,235 crowd, Emilio Martinez became a hero for Argentina and Laturo Martinez, who has had a stinker of a World Cup decided the outcome.
