A WOMAN Police Constable fatally shot a man she said was unfaithful to her before turning the gun on herself in Chaguanas on Tuesday.
Police Constable Dwight Skeete was killed inside his home at Opal Boulevard at Edingburgh 500 by WPC Jossette Marshall where he had shared a relationship with her for the past two years.
Initial reports noted that Marshall was suffering from depression after she accused Skeete of being unfaithful and he had ended their relationship.
Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher expressed sadness and concern on Tuesday mere hours after the incident occurred.
She said, “I wish to express the deep sadness that the TTPS experienced today following reports that two police officers were involved in a deadly shooting incident in what so far appears to be a murder suicide.”
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) in a media release at 5.25 pm stated that around 2.24 pm, officers from the Community Police department, Central Division, were on patrol in the Edinburgh 500, Chaguanas area when they were alerted by a resident that there was a shooting incident at the corner of Opal and Kestrel Boulevard.
The officers responded, along with officers of the Homicide Bureau, and when they arrived at the address they found bodies of a woman and a man lying in a corridor of the house.
Both were unresponsive and appeared to bear gunshot wounds.
Information received at the scene confirmed that the victims were both police officers, Marshall attached to the Police Administration Building and her male companion, acting Corporal Dwight Skeete, attached to the Court and Process department, both located in Port of Spain.
Harewood-Christopher in an audio message said the necessary support from the TTPS Victims and Support Unit will be extended to family members and colleagues of the officers.
She said the public will be updated as more information becomes available as the investigation was in the early stages.
After Skeete ended the relationship he went back to live at another house with the mother of his child.
Marshall who had become depressed, asked Skeete to meet her at the house to talk about the situation. That was when the murder/suicide took place.
Police said that Marshall had recently applied for leave to deal with her depression abroad but was denied that leave.
