THE National Award given to Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Trinidad and Tobago (PCTT) The Rev Right Joy Abdul-Mohan is indicative of the role women play in the organisation.

So said General Secretary of the PCTT Terrence Warde on Wednesday following Mohan-Abdul receiving the National Medal for Women Development (Gold) at a ceremony at President’s House in St Ann’s. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, National Awards for 2020 and 2021 were presented on Monday and Wednesday respectively.

He said, “Rev Joy is a woman of substance and the Lord has gifted her with the personality, the reverence, the humility and the ability to lead the Church through this period of pandemic. This time of absolute uncertainty required a special type of leader and the Church was blessed to have Rev Abdul-Mohan to navigate the adversity and maintain the operations of the Church.”

Warde said, “This award is indicative of the role that women play in the Church and is a testament to the resilience of our women in our Church and in our country.

“The Bible Women of our Church’s history was the foundation for women like Rev. Joy to emerge as leaders of distinction and value to the present Church. The PCTT is proud of her achievement and thanks God for her service.”

And the Synod Office of the PCTT stated that Abdul-Mohan was a minister of deep faith and loyalty and a woman of substance.

It stated, “This award for the Development of Women comes coincidentally at a time when the whole world including the Christian Church is celebrating International Women’s Day, held on 8th March and the annual recognition of women and their significant contributions globally.”

The synod stated that in her 33 years as an ordinated minister Abdul-Mohan has spread the Word of God with compassion.

It stated, “Her role in keeping alive issues of women in general, and issues of gender-based violence and domestic violence in particular, within the Church and in the wider community and country, is quite a vocation in pastoral care and activism.”

The synod also stated that Abdul-Mohan was the first locally ordained female minister of the PCTT and the youngest minister at 23 years.

She was also the first female principal of the St Andrew’s Theological College.

Abdul-Mohan also served as a Senator in the 10th Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago and has served as vice-president of the Rapidfire Kidz Foundation for more than ten years.

Contacted for comment, Abdul-Mohan said she accepted the award with the deepest humility and not as a symbol of any personal achievement.

She said it was a tribute to all women who labour sacrificially and magnanimously behind the scenes to improve and develop the lives not only of women but of all God’s children.

Abdul-Mohan said she paid tribute to:

  • To all women of T&T;
  • Specifically, to the women of the Presbyterian Church (lay and clergy) and its educational institutions;
  • The women of Princes Town, the town of my birth;
  • The women of the Rapidfire Kidz Foundation, of which I serve as vice president;
  • The women of ecumenical and interfaith organisations;
  • The women of Call To Action for Social Change (a new organization formed in 2021 to treat with the root causes of gender based-violence and other social issues);
  • The women who serve unconditionally and tirelessly with institutions/homes/shelters/organisations for children, women, the elderly and the migrant community; and
  • To all the men who support women’s development, who genuinely love and respect women as equal partners in God’s creation.
