Are there any new and interesting topics of thought this week or are we still stuck in a repetitive vortex of different stories, same reasons, same outcomes?
As an opinion writer, I often ask myself these questions as I scour over endless news articles, social media posts and other personal events.
Sadly, there are weeks like this one, that no matter what the topic, the cause or resolution of the issue is something I have written about numerous times before.
I debated writing on the opening of schools… a stone from which I have squeezed blood over the past two years. I am overjoyed that schools are reopening, my children are happier than they have been in a long time knowing that in a matter of weeks they will be back with their friends and away from their dragon mother for at least seven hours a day.
Buuuttttt, being the thinker I am, I have questions that I know will not be answered. These include whether the Ministry of Education has put any support systems in place for children who have fallen behind academically, have any plans been put into place to deal with the challenges of emotionally distressed children who will need a little extra support and what about immunocompromised children who cannot return to school, is there anything in place for them?
Just focus on the good Alicia, those little bundles of joy you birthed are heading back out.
And let me make this clear, if anyone plays the fool and causes schools to be shut again, I will devote all of my time to find you and just rain a hurricane of misery upon the earth on which you stand. All yuh know me, I’m different.
Speaking of violence, I briefly considered dipping my toes into the entanglement that was Will Smith’s smack attack on Chris Rock. I mean everyone and their tanty neighbour’s pothound, has a rather strong opinion on the event, so who is me to add my two cents?
Well since you asked…Will Smith was wrong. He is just another example of a rich and powerful man who can do as he pleases without any repercussions. A symbol of toxic masculinity, an emotionally out of control man who chose to use the palm of his hand rather than his words to express his distaste for Rock’s jab at his wife’s appearance. He reinforced the idea that women are simply damsels in distress and need a man to fight their fights… we all know Jada could have thrown a better punch.
Smith’s actions overshadowed his award and have tainted his legacy.
All jokes aside violence is never the answer… again something I have written a thousand times.
But alas next week we will all get caught up in some other ridiculous pop culture scandal… probably involving a Kardashain… so why waste my breath.
This brings me to a topic that I have been extremely hesitant to discuss because it is a devastatingly emotional one and I do not have all the facts I need to develop an educated, balanced opinion. In regards to the tragic loss of four divers on February 25, it would be remiss of me to jump to any conclusions. I will tell you this, personally, I think there was fault by both LCMS and Paria, especially in the handling of rescue operations and the handling of the families.
I can only hope that when this snail train of Commission of Enquiry concludes we will have the answers we need. The real question that must be asked is whether anyone will be held accountable and will justice be served? I hope so, but again, as I have soapbox shouted on repeat, justice is rarely served and the way things are progressing it may take aeons before the COE starts and concludes.
All we can do is hope, pray and put pressure where it needs to be put, and refuse to let ourselves become distracted with trivial things such as, the prime minister’s interesting wardrobe choice at a Shouter Baptist celebration held this past week.
Hopefully next week my thoughts will find some clarity, with a bold hint of new. Until then I’ll be talking to myself, trying to compose a thought or an idea worth 750 words (or fewer to please my editor).
What to Write About This Week
AH yes what dead horse should I beat today?
