EMANCIPATION DAY is a call to attention for persons to recognise that society is not as civilized as some may think and many are still being broken by unfair systems.

The Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP) stands with the national community and the world in observing the auspicious day as it continues to do its part in breaking the wheels of injustice wherever it rolled said its political leader Phillip Alexander.

He said, “If the observance of Emancipation Day is to truly mean something, let us use it to rededicate ourselves to the freedom of those still trapped by artificial conditions and unjust laws, to redevelop ourselves as a nation where all our people are truly and completely free.”

Alexander noted that the ones who fought for the ending of slavery were not slaves themselves as they had no rights and no voice, so others had to speak for them.

He said, “Emancipation Day does not wipe away the stain of the insanity of some humans being less human, or of others using unjust laws to do the most reprehensible things. It gave the enslaved their freedom, but it never gave them justice. It did not undo ripping families apart and torturing loved ones in the presence of those they loved.”

Phillip added, “We need days like Emancipation Day to remind us of our worst selves in the hopes it will shame us into being our best selves. Celebrate Emancipation Day but never forget, as long as any are not free none are truly free.”

He said while there were no physical chains, other forms of slavery existed politically and economically, in a class system that divides from birth.
