MINISTER of Social Development Donna Cox needs to be more compassionate towards the hunger needs of the population.
On Sunday, the United National Congress (UNC) Women’s Arm issued a press release stating that Cox’s recent statements that some people were “in need and some are greedy” was just another example of Government’s inconsideration during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Cox made those statements following Friday’s rush for hampers at South Park Mall in San Fernando.
Chairwoman of UNC’s National Women’s Arm Kenya Charles stated, “This is sending a clear, urgent and repeated message that ‘Hunger may very well kill us before coronavirus’ People are not truly free when they are unable to feed their families! People are not truly free when they are unable to retire with dignity! People are not truly free when they are unemployed! People are not truly free when they have no proper health care!”
To Cox, Charles said, “If you cannot be humbled enough to understand and address the hunger of your citizens, then we request that you step down immediately, as it is very clear that because of your lack of care and respect for the less fortunate you lack the impetus and therefore have no idea what the common citizens of Trinidad and Tobago are going in these trying times.”
