THREE weeks, three very different Terrences.

A hero, a horner and an unsympathetic victim.

Terrence number one: Terrence David, a heroic gentleman from Sea Lots, who along with another resident, risked his life to pull to a complete stranger out of their burning car within the vicinity of the Port of Spain market.

This Terrence, who others would have hastily called a “pest” due to place of residence, became a national hero of sorts. He showed the type of selfless bravery that reignited a small spark of hope in Trinbagonians who have come to only expect the worst of their fellow citizens.

Very rarely do we hear or read about truly exceptional people. Someone climbs into a flaming car, endangering their own wellbeing for that of another, especially a stranger, is an exceptional person.

This was the best Terrence of the lot, because it all goes downhill for Terrences from here on out.

Terrence number two: Officer Horner Man Terrence. A saga that captured the nation. This Terrence was propelled into notoriety, when his wife delivered some “exceptional” news to him and his parents… I am assuming Terrence is a “mammy’s nice child.”

Terrence was going to be a daddy! But his wife wasn’t the mommy. Oh snap! What followed in this now infamous viral video, was his Terrence’s wife detailing his unfaithful shenanigans with the young twenty something Shania.

Oooo child, hickeys (or MP5 straps), hotel visits, taking his child to lime with the outside woman child, Terrence was just shameless!

Following his buss files, then came Shania’s video response where she asserted that she did not know Terrence was still married… she claims she feel for the good old “we separated” excuse… and people weren’t buying it. Hollywood, Bollywood or Netflix couldn’t create a better script.

Then came a legal letter, gossip column style newspaper articles and of course the reconciliation of T&T’s most famous couple.

A lot of time and brain cells were wasted on this Terrence, but it was a welcome distraction from the usual crime reports, corruption allegations and our opposition leader losing her marbles, going full Trump, and accusing the Ministry of Health of distributing fake Covid-19 vaccines… there are no words, just no words.

Speaking of our Ministry of Health and the man that heads it, we now come to Terrence number three.

On Tuesday, Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh was liming with his much beloved St Joseph constituents outside the Nyabinghi Bar, being cool, just showing everyone he’s down to earth, he’s just a regular Trini like you and me.

Hey, and just like a regular Trini, he got hit with the sour burn of being victimised by criminals. According to reports, around 5pm, two men exited a vehicle and robbed Deyalsingh of his gold bracelet. The horror! How dare these criminals rob a Minister! A Minister! I mean!

That night, a video was circulated of Deyalsingh shortly after the robbery talking on the phone to whom many of us suspect is a parliamentary colleague.

He was recorded saying, “I am in St Joseph in my constituency. Five o’clock, hot sun, bright sun, sitting outside Nyabinghi Bar opposite the church (St Joseph RC Church) with a constituent. Two fellas walk up to me, put a gun to my head and robbed me of my bracelet.

Just letting you know where crime has reached…The police are here… you don’t have to get (involved) I’m just letting you know.”

“JUST LETTING YOU KNOW WHERE CRIME HAS REACHED,” … I guess this Terrence has not yet come to understand the severity of the crime situation his constituents and national community have long recognised. Can’t blame him really, after all doesn’t his parliamentary partner like assure us that crime isn’t out of control?

Unfortunately, no one shed a tear for Terrence. His reaction was a raw example of how disconnected our leaders are to the lawlessness that plagues our land. While people weren’t cheering, they weren’t exactly overly sympathetic either.

Getting a bracelet snatched off your wrist… which the police got back the next day, along with the two alleged robbers, proving the police can do a good job when the motivation is right… is inconsequential on the victim scale considering on Thursday an entire family in Freeport was tied up and watched four teenage bandits ransack their entire home.

Maybe now that crime has touched Terrence #3 so deeply, he will march into his next cabinet meeting, slam his fists down and demand proper action be taken, because just look at where crime has reached!

A minister can’t even enjoy a lil lime, wearing a large gold bracelet without being targeted by thieves! Oh, the depths of despair!

There we have it, three weeks, three Terrences, three different stories. The hero, the horner man and the unsympathetic victim.
