MINISTER of Finance Davendranath Tancoo has entered the 103.1 FM’s Impressions of the Icons competition.

His decision to compete stemmed from a challenge posed to him by his sister.

On Tuesday, 103.1FM posted a video of Tancoo on its Facebook page singing a rendition of Raat Kali Ek Khwab Mein from the Bollywood hit movie Buddha Mil Gaya (1971).

Speaking to AZP News Tancoo said he had always considered himself more than a “bathroom singer,” until his mother got very ill during the pandemic.

Tancoo said, “She was very very unwell and in hospital, so I actually sang a religious song, taped it, because I could not go in to see her, and sent it with my sister and that started me on the journey of singing.”

Asked why he chose to enter the competition he said, “I don’t consider myself a singer, I just play around… but it was a challenge by my sister. My sister is the singer in the family, and she challenged me to do it, she was there actually while I was taking the snippet to send.”

Regarding the song he selected, Tancoo said he had always been a fan of Anil Bheem who had his rendition of Raat Kali Ek Khwab Mein Aayi,  a song of deep emotion. He said upon researching songs, this song was one of the first that popped up and he saw it as a “sign.”

Tancoo said he was hoping to “evoke light-heartedness” with the decision to join the competition, an emotion that can be seen in many of the comments posted under his video.

The 103.1 FM’s Impressions of the Icons competition invites persons of all ages to submit a video of them singing a song from one of the following artists: Sonny Mann, Anand Yankaran, Drupatee Ramgoonai, Ashnie or Anil Bheem.
