DUE to overwhelming response to the South Park Plaza hamper distribution drive, the distribution planned for two days have been cancelled.
South Park posted on its Facebook page on Friday, “Unfortunately, even with police presence, we experienced difficulty in ensuring compliance with the safety ordinance.
“We will be working with the police to develop a different distribution strategy to provide help to those that need it the most. In light of this, we have had to cancel the events for Friday the 25th and Tuesday, the 29th of June.
“We do apologise for the cancellation, but it was necessary for the safety of all our citizens.”
One of the organisers had told AZPNews.com that all protocols would have been followed and there would be an added security presence.
On Friday, Rory Moses told AZPNews.com that persons were waiting from 6am for the distribution which was carded to start at 10am.
He said some 200 hampers were given out before the event was stopped.
Moses said because a crowd was expected, additional hampers were created and there were still approximately 500 to be given out in the future.
“They will be given out. We will be working to have a different strategy in how to do a distribution in a pandemic and we will be given them to persons who need it,” he said.
