MINISTER of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan tells the Parliament on Friday that he may be called Jesus of Lord Ram if he could guarantee no flooding in the upcoming rainy season.

He made the comment in answer to a question by Caroni East MP Dr Rishad Seecheran about maintenance works on watercourses in his constituency.

Dr Seecheran asked: Will the Minister inform this House of the schedule for maintenance works of watercourses during the dry season, in the following areas:
a) Las Lomas;
b) El Carmen;
c) St. Helena;
d) Kelly Village; and
e) Warrenville?

Sinanan said there were two phases of works for the central branch of the Drainage Division schedule for implementation at this time.

He said that maintenance work in the areas identified in the question were within phase one and currently underway.

Sinanan said that these watercourses would be cleared by the end of March which was way in advance of the start of the rainy season.

In a supplemental question, Dr Seecheran asked: “Are you confident that the maintenance works will be sufficient to prevent major flooding during the rainy season later on, in this year.”

In his reply, Sinanan said this was a trick question. He added, “The ministry will do what it has to do to minimise flooding in all areas.

“We are cleaning the water courses but I can’t guarantee the Member of Parliament that there would be no flooding or my name would have been… they might call me Jesus.”

This brought laughter from the government benches and as Sinanan sat down, St Joseph MP and Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh, on the front bench turned to Sinanan and said, “or Lord Ram,” to which Sinanan repeated, “or Lord Ram.”
