THE gardener at Port-of-Spain Mayor Joel Martinez’s home has been hospitalised after being shot.
Reports are that he was shot at Martinez’s home at Perseverance Road, Moka, just after 3 pm on Thursday after a suspect jumped the wall.
Several shots were fired and the gardener was shot in the chest and arm.
Due to his excessive bleeding, he was taken by police officers to the hospital although an ambulance was contacted.
Martinez told AZP News on Friday morning that the gardener who was considered to be like family was still being treated at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.
He said the gardener who is in his thirties grew up with his family and he was not known to be involved in any compromising activities.
Martinez said, “The entire community is shaken and very concerned. We are all trying to comfort each other at this point in time. We have asked for additional police patrols and we are seeing that. The private security company is also doing additional patrols.”
The mayor said police were investigating the matter and looking at all evidence gathered including spent shells and other items retrieved from the scene.
Martinez said he will attempt to visit the gardener on Friday and offer whatever assistance he could as he wishes for him a speedy recovery.
