Policeman Killed in Fight at Couva Bar

A POLICEMAN who was involved in a fight with a man was fatally killed outside a bar in Couva around 12.55 am on Friday.

Reports indicated that Cpl Marlone Mitchelle was off duty and got into an altercation with a man at a bar at McBean Village. Mitchelle was shot and reports also indicated that the assailant took the policeman’s firearm.

Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher extended her condolences to the family on Mitchelle in a release on Friday.

She said, “It is with deep sadness and profound sorrow that I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of No. 16573 Corporal Marlone Mitchelle, who tragically lost his life on February 9th, 2024.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed that around 12:55 am today, Cpl Mitchelle, who was off duty at the time, was involved in a confrontation with another individual at a bar located at Mc Bean Village, Couva. This altercation tragically escalated, resulting in the fatal shooting of the officer. 

“Officers who were on mobile patrol responded to the report and arrived at the scene around 1.02 am, made their observations then secured the area. Senior officers from the Central Division, as well as officers of the Homicide Bureau and CSI have also visited the scene and the investigation is underway. 

“During this difficult time, our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences are extended to Cpl Mitchelle’s family, friends, and colleagues as they navigate through this painful loss. We stand in solidarity with them, offering our unwavering support as they mourn the loss of their loved one.

“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Cpl Mitchelle’s death is ongoing, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served. We urge anyone with information regarding this tragic incident to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities in their investigation.”
