Sea Lots — A man is dead following a confrontation with police in the early hours of Tuesday in the Sea Lots community.
According to initial reports, around 1 am officers from the Guard and Emergency Branch, along with the Port of Spain Division, were conducting operations in the area. The police presence was in response to intelligence that a suspect wanted in connection with the recent shooting of a police officer had been spotted in Sea Lots.
The officers proceeded to Production Avenue where they entered a room. It was here that they encountered a man armed with a cutlass.
In a sudden and violent attack, the suspect swung the cutlass at a corporal, striking him in the head. Fortunately, the officer’s helmet absorbed much of the blow, preventing serious injury.
In response to the attack, other officers on the scene drew their licensed firearms and opened fire on the suspect. The man was hit and fell to the ground.
Despite being rushed to the Port of Spain General Hospital, the suspect was pronounced dead on arrival.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased.
