PRIME Minister Dr Keith Rowley says Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar statements on Saturday were dangerous and unpatriotic.

His statements come after Persad-Bissessar commented on his apology Saturday, following Wednesday’s chaos in vaccines distribution last week.

In a release on Sunday, Dr Rowley said, “The most recent statement of the Opposition Leader, appealing for a 1990-style insurrection to be the response of those citizens who are undergoing the hardships that many are currently experiencing, is a most dangerous, damaging and unpatriotic obstruction in this time of our national struggle in these pandemic times.

“Such a statement could easily be misunderstood or viewed as acceptable encouragement by any unfortunates who may think that this thought is an acceptable response.

“The Opposition Leader clearly believes that she could benefit from such a development but any such actions would be very costly and detrimental to the entire nation.

“Clearly that is not any of her concern.”

And Political Leader of the PNM Tobago Council Tracy  Davidson-Celestine was calling on Opposition Leader Kamala Persad Bissessar to apologise to the nation for inciting civil unrest.

Davidson-Celestine described the opposition leader’s statements as “criminal,” especially in a time of a pandemic when the whole world and the country were hurting.

In a release on Sunday, she said, “As a lawyer and a former leader of this country, Persad-Bissessar knows exactly what she is doing by pushing the buttons for the public to agitate. Every country around the world is hurting, we are no exception. Nothing is perfect. But the statement is nothing short of criminal and puts this country at risk. She knows what words can do to incite people, when it comes to politics.”

She said, “Shame on Persad- Bissessar for using the pain of the people like this. You dishonor the memory of every life lost to Covid-19 and everyone who has been affected.”

The PNM Youth League also called her comments vile.

Other statements condemning Persad-Bissessar were issued by PNM MPs Faris Al-Rawi, Stuart Young, Marvin Gonzales and Symon de Nobriga, the PNM’s Women’s League and the PNM’s D’Abadie/O’Mera Constituency.
