TRINIDAD and Tobago has taken more Venezuelan migrants per acre than any other country in the world.
This according to Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley speaking at a news conference on Thursday.
He maintained his position concerning the Organisation of American States (OAS) and international calls for T&T to do more to assist Venezuelans when T&T has done more to assist the Venezuelans than any other country.
Dr Rowley said his government will not be pressured by international and local bodies to extend aid that could become unmanageable.
“We have taken more Venezuelans on a per acre more than anybody else in the world,” he said.
The prime minister was adamant that T&T will not vote on any resolutions made within the OAS as long as a Venezuelan representative was present since Venezuela left the OAS.
He also said that T&T’s membership was not in danger. “We are a member, not a sheep. We are a member and our record can stand scrutiny anywhere, anytime.”
Dr Rowley criticised the Opposition for allegedly undermining Government’s position on the issue.
He referred to a document called ACP Invisible Migrants “A profile of irregular migration, smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons in T&T” adding that his government has been taking into consideration the recommendations made seven years ago and he questioned if the then People’s Partnership even saw that particular document.
Describing it as a valuable piece of work, he said it has assisted in key decision making by his government.
Dr Rowley emphasised that T&T was not like Germany, France and the United States and that an asylum seeker and an economic seeker were two different categories of people and that T&T could not accommodate every migrant who was an economic seeker.
Next year, Rowley will become Caricom’s chairman but he said his government’s position on Venezuela will remain the same.

TRINIDAD y Tobago ha recibido más migrantes Venezolanos por acre que cualquier otro país del mundo.
Esto según el primer ministro, el Dr. Keith Rowley, hablando en una conferencia de prensa el jueves.
Mantuvo su posición con respecto a la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) y los llamamientos internacionales para que T&T haga más para ayudar a los Venezolanos cuando T&T ha hecho más para ayudar a los Venezolanos que cualquier otro país.
Dijo que su gobierno no será presionado por organismos internacionales y locales para extender la ayuda que podría volverse inmanejable.
“Hemos aceptado más Venezolanos por acre más que cualquier otro país en el mundo.”
El primer ministro insistió en que T&T no votará sobre ninguna resolución hecha dentro de la OEA mientras haya un representante Venezolano presente ya que Venezuela dejó la OEA.
También dijo que la membresía de T&T no estaba en peligro. “Somos un miembro, no una oveja. Somos miembros y nuestro historial puede resistir el escrutinio en cualquier lugar y en cualquier momento.”
El Dr Rowley criticó a la oposición por supuestamente socavar la posición del Gobierno sobre el tema.
Se refirió a un documento denominado Migrantes invisibles ACP “Un perfil de migración irregular, tráfico ilícito de migrantes y trata de personas en T&T” y agregó que su gobierno ha estado tomando en consideración las recomendaciones formuladas hace siete años y cuestionó si la entonces People’s Partnerships incluso vio ese documento en particular.
Al describirlo como un trabajo valioso, dijo que ha ayudado a su gobierno a tomar decisiones clave.
El Dr Rowley enfatizó que T&T no era como Alemania, Francia y los Estados Unidos y que un solicitante de asilo y un buscador económico eran dos categorías diferentes de personas y que T&T no podía acomodar a todos los migrantes que eran un buscador económico.
El año que viene, Rowley se convertirá en el presidente de Caricom, pero dijo que la posición de su gobierno sobre Venezuela seguirá siendo la misma.
