WASA stated in a media release that since January the Authority has responded to multiple reports of sewer chokes and overflows in the St. James area which traced back to the deliberate disposal of an oil-like substance into manholes.

WASA stated, “Despite replacing a compromised manhole cover with a locked one to prevent further dumping, the issue has persisted in February and March 2025, with the dumping of plastic bottles, bags, rags and other items, leading to repeated disruptions in service and necessitating emergency interventions, including the use of specialized equipment and sewer tankers.”
WASA is reminding the public that such actions place an unnecessary strain on the country’s sewerage infrastructure and resources.
Earlier this week, WASA also reported that over 34 water connections in the Gasparillo district were vandalised.
