SHELVES in supermarkets and stores across Trinidad and Tobago are being emptied of water, hand sanitisers and non-perishable items due to fears that the Covid-19 pandemic will affect the country.
The World Health Organization has declared the Covid-19 a pandemic and it has caused reaction all over the world with travel restrictions and quarantines taking place.
President of the Trinidad and Tobago Supermarket Association (SATT) Rajiv Diptee said there are reports of panic buying and rationing by supermarkets. He stressed that rationing was not encouraged.
Speaking to AZPNews.com, Diptee said, “This is something that we are still responding to right now because it has rapidly developed.
“There is some panic buying setting in at the moment in terms of toiletries, cleaning supplies, Lysol wipes, bleaches, canned foods.
He said thus far he was not hearing any shortage being reported from suppliers.
Diptee said, “The reality is everyone is facing the same logistical challenges because of supply disruptions between Europe and China along trade routes.”
Harry Ramnarine of Ramnarine Supermarket in Diego Martin said there was also an increased in demand for items such as rubbing alcohol and disinfectant sprays.
Shelves at Pennywise stores and Price Smart look depleted.
There was also a sign in Price Smart allowing customers only three items each on certain items.
The Ministry of Health has stated that there have been no confirmed cases of the Covid-19 virus in Trinidad and Tobago as yet.
