WITH the rainy season just a few months away, there has been nothing done to prevent flooding in the constituency of Oropouche West.

This is according to its Member of Parliament Davendranath Tancoo who claims that the people of Woodland and other low-lying areas were being geographically discriminated by the Ministry of Works and Transport.

He made the statement after visiting several watercourses in Woodland.

In a press release on Wednesday, Tancoo asked no work was being done in the dry season to prevent flooding in the area which is a recurrent problem annually.

The release stated, “In one case, Ministry of Works personnel had brought heavy equipment on site, yet not a stone was moved, but the equipment was quickly loaded and carried away. It is obvious that remedial work on riverbanks and dredging water courses to prevent flooding, must be done in the dry season. Instead, No riverbanks were rebuilt. No rivers dredged. Nothing!”

Tancoo asked, “Why has no work been done on the river banks which had been breached in the last rainy season causing mass destruction and flooding?”

AZP News has observed the clearing and dredging of several watercourses in various parts of Trinidad since the year began including Claxton Bay, Charlieville, Santa Cruz and Caparo.

Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan has declined to respond to Tancoo’ claims.
