GAME wardens and officers of the Praedial Larceny Squad (PLS) found no wild meat during surprise inspections at vendors at theTarouba Link Load, Duncan Village and Penal on Sunday.
A release by the Ministry of Agriculture Land and Fisheries stated, “During this morning’s exercise, several butchers were also interviewed and notable improvements of the conditions of the slaughtering areas were reported. Officers were also pleased to report that no wild meat was seen and there was a total absence of the goats that were suspected to be illegally imported.”
Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries Kazim Hosein commended the officers from the PLS and the Forestry Division.
He said, “I want to thank the officers of the ministry for putting country first and doing their part to ensure that citizens obey the Conservation of Wildlife Act and in so doing, discourage any illegal Wildlife trade. He further warned, “Individuals who breach the law are being warned as there are serious consequences for the sale of illegally-acquired livestock.”
Inspector Haspoodeen and Game Warden II Seepersad, accompanied by Assistant Conservator of Forests Mohan were part of this exercise. Similar to the last routine exercise vendors were educated on the consequences of the illegal importation of animals and animal products, the release stated.
The ministry urged the public to report activities of illegal importation of animals and animal products as these pose a severe threat to human health and safety.
Similar exercises are planned for the near future, the release stated.
