THE leadership of the United National Congress (UNC) is once again being challenged as a motion was filed to have inactive members once again play a key role in the party.

The motion was filed on Wednesday by UNC life members Fuad Khan and Ramona Ramdial, former Members of Parliament and government ministers under the People’s Partnership administration that was led by UNC political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

The motion was filed following the voting process by the Electoral College for President last Friday in which Government’s nominee Christine Kangaloo received the majority of votes to become President-elect and reportedly three UNC members spoiling their ballots.

It also comes ahead of the UNC’s National Congress scheduled for Sunday.

The motion is supported by other UNC members as well as attorney Larry Lalla.

The motion letter was addressed to UNC general secretary Peter Kanhai with request for the motion to be debated at the Congress to be held at the Couva South Multi Purpose Hall on Sunday. It calls for internal elections in three months but without the post of political leader being contested.

The motion filed by Khan and seconded by Ramdial states that the UNC has not been able to achieve electoral success in the past seven years since 2015 and that many members, former past members, former executive, founding members have all been inactive in the party’s forward strategy and the party can benefit from their experience.

The motion also states that the coalition of parties in 2010 was able to win Government.

The motion is asking that the leadership consisting of the political leader and the National Executive (Nat-Ex), find a method of approach to communicate and embrace the forementioned groups of previous experienced members and well-wishers.

Failure to develop such a plan within three months should result in a new internal election for a Nat-Ex without the position of political leader being contested, the motion stated.

The motion also listed other conditions for such an election.
