The Kiwis also became the fourth team in history to win a Test after following on.

A century partnership between Joe Root and England captain Ben Stokes came close to helping the visitors on the last day. But, Wagner used the short ball effectively.

England were sent in to bat and declared their first innings at 435 for 8 with Root not out on 153.

New Zealand were then bowled out for 209 and Stokes enforced the follow on.

In their second innings, the Kiwis got to 483 thanks to a 132 from 282 balls by Kane Williamson, a 90 from Tom Blundell and 83 from the bat of Tom Latham.

Root managed a 95 in England’s second stint at the crease as the visitors made 256.

New Zealand now join West Indies, who beat Australia in Adelaide in 1993, as the only teams to win a Test match by one run.

New Zealand 209 (Southee 73, Broad 4 for 61, Anderson 3 for 37) and 483 (Williamson 132, Blundell 90, Latham 81, Leach 5-157) beat England 435 for 8 dec (Brook 186, Root 153*, Henry 4-100) and 256 (Root 95, Wagner 4 for 62, Southee 3 for 45) by one run.
