A SHARP decline in subscribers to popular American subscription streaming service and production company Netflix may cause the company to crack down on the sharing of passwords.
This is in an attempt to get new members to sign up for the service especially as there is a huge decline in subscribers, a BBC report stated.
Netflix was impacted after it raised prices in some countries and left Russia due to its conflict with Ukraine losing 700,000 subscribers. Facing stiff competition from Amazon and Disney, it warned shareholders that another two million subscribers were likely to leave in the next three months leading up to July.
Netflix estimates that more than 100 million households watch the service for free using shared passwords.
According to Netflix’s head Reed Hastings, the sharing of passwords was legitimate amongst family members but that was making more difficult to attract new subscribers in some countries, the BBC stated.
Presently, payment plans are being tested to curb password sharing in Latin America and this could be rolled out to other countries.
Since last month, account holders in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru must pay to add user profiles for people outside their household.
The company currently allows people who live together to share their Netflix account.
