Mayaro Man Charged After High-Speed Chase Goes Viral

A  MAYARO man has been charged following the high-speed chase last week that was recorded and shared widely on social media.

Police reported on Tuesday that Shawn Guy, 23, was charged with malicious damage and larceny of $20,000.

Guy, of Manzanilla Road, Mayaro, was charged following an incident which occurred on July 28 at ABC Home Store located at Aranguez Access Road, South Aranguez.

The driver of the vehicle, parked his Isuzu Dmax van and went to make a purchase. On his return, he saw a man briskly walking away from his vehicle and entered a red Nissan Sylphy which quickly drove off.

The vehicle owner saw the right rear window broken and upon checking observed that $20,000 cash was missing from an envelope which was left in a bag on the back seat.

The victim and his brother followed the red Nissan Sylphy along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway. The victim contacted the police and also recorded a video which was shared on social media. The red Nissan Sylphy came to a stop at dead end at Gobin Trace #2, Barataria.

 

Two men jumped out of that vehicle and escaped. The driver was subdued by the victim and his brother and was handed over to responding police officers shortly after.

After investigations were conducted, Guy was charged and appeared before Justice of the Peace, Abrahim Ali, where he was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 with a surety. He is expected to appear virtually at Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court on September 6. Investigations were spearheaded by Senior Supt Winston Maharaj, supervised by Acting Sgt Maynard of San Juan CID.

Guy was charged by PC Caraballo, of the San Juan CID. The search is on for the other two men.
