Letter to Editor: Support Local

Spread the love
‘What do sandwiches with artificial meats have over a sada roti and pumpkin or bhagi rice, sweet potatoes and roasted chicken?’

WHEN we understand that supporting local prevents poverty and keeps the wealth amongst our vulnerable and in the end sustains wide groups of our brothers and sisters, only then will we begin on the road to sustainability.

Multinational corporations (with billions of dollars in backing) are failing globally with massive closures in their home markets yet in sweet T&T, they flourish.

Call me stupid but I will always support any local bar or restaurant instead of the transplanted mimic western culture!

While we turn our backs on our very own people, we instead build up these “wanna-be foreign-owned brands”. Why are we boycotting our locals? Isn’t this commercial and cultural imperialism? What do sandwiches with artificial meats have over a sada roti and pumpkin or bhagi rice, sweet potatoes and roasted chicken?

I’ll take my local cuisine any day!

What does a more expensive foreign espresso made with the same machine and the same dark roasted beans have over a cup of coffee from our locally owned cafes?

Call me stupid but I will always support any local bar or restaurant instead of the transplanted mimic western culture! I’ll eat fresh carite any day before I buy imported salmon. I’ll support Julie, calabash, cutlass, starch or sugar mangoes before kiwis, five fingers before peaches, mammy sepot before grapes, guavas before pears. When we buy local it makes a big difference to our communities as the wealth is circulated rather than exporting it to fatten foreign corporations.

Our small life choices affect thousands. Let’s wake up from mental slavery and together take one small step forward to support each other. If only we could get our politicians and public influencers to join the “support our own” campaign, we would all prosper.
