THE Inter-Religious Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago (IRO) will not be getting involved in the matter regarding the sale of murtis at a major supermarket in Chaguanas.

In a letter from the Real Street Jamaat, a branch of the Anjuman Sunnat ul Jamaat Association (ASJA), Trinidad and Tobago’s largest Muslim organisation, Haji Imtiaz Ali wrote to Chairman of the ASJA Imam’s Council Haji Kazim Ali asking him to ensure the items were removed from the Price Club Supermarket. Kazim Ali is the owner of the supermarket.

Head of the IRO, Pandit Lloyd Sirjoo said he spoke with Imtiaz Ali, who is also the IRO’s public relations officer on the matter on Monday.

Sirjoo told AZPNews.com on Monday that Ali did not write the letter representing the IRO but his personal organisation.

He said Ali was speaking on behalf of himself and not the entire IRO that comprises several persons from various religious backgrounds.

He said, “I do not see any involvement with the IRO at this time. That is an internal matter with ASJA and their membership. We will allow the Islamic community to dissolve their own issues.”

Sirjoo added, “We would not interfere in any internal runnings of any organisation until we are asked to come in and assist in resolving any issues.”

Price Club Supermarket issued a release on Facebook stating that it will continue to be a supermarket for all persons regardless of faith and that the murtis stay on the shelf.
