AN investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the death of Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard Ordinary Seaman Gyasi Richardson.

Police said Richardson was shot on board the TTS Speyside around 4.45 pm when the vessel was part of an exercise near Chacachacare Island on the northwest cost of Trinidad.

It was reported that his weapon accidentally discharged and Richardson was shot in the head.

He was rushed to Staubles Bay in Chaguaramas and then taken to the St James Infirmary where he died.

Police received information that Richardson was at the time cleaning his firearm.

A release on Tuesday from the Coast Guard stated: “The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) wishes to advise of the unfortunate passing of one of its members who was on border patrol duty on  April 7 2020.

“Investigations are currently ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident. We extend our sincerest condolences to members of the families of all those involved and ask that their privacy be respected during these difficult times.”
