JAMAICA – WEST Indies needed 468 to even the test series against India, but it was never going to happen. They fell 257 runs short at Sabina Park in Jamaica on Monday.

India now move to the top of the World Test Championship table with 120 points.

The victory means that Virat Kohli overtakes MS Dhoni with the most wins as India Captain. Kohli now has 28 wins under his belt.

India batted first and made 416 all out with Hanuma Vihari getting to 111.

West Indies could only muster 117 in their first innings with Shimron Hetmyer top scoring with 34. India did not enforce the follow on and declared on 168 for four in their second innings. This meant that West Indies had a mammoth task ahead of them. They needed to get 468.

Batting a second time, Shamarh Brooks was run out on 50 and Jermaine Blackwood (38) and Jason Holder (39) put up a little resistance.

Jamaican Blackwood, was not in the West Indies original squad, but fielded as a substitute during this game.

He had replaced Darren Bravo who retired hurt on the third day after being hit on the helmet off a bouncer off Jasprit Bumrah.

The ball had the right side stem guard flying from his helmet. Bravo faced two balls on the third day and returned on the fourth day when he faced ten more. He retired hurt and after a concussion was confirmed, match referee David Boon approved the application of the West Indies to have Blackwood come into the game as a substitute.

Blackwood is the second concussion substitute in Test cricket after Marnus Labuschagne came into for Steve Smith in the Lord’s Ashes Test last month.

India 416 (Vihari 111, Kohli 76, Ishant 57, Holder 5-77, Cornwall 3-105) and 168 for 4 dec. (Rahane 64*, Vihari 53*, Roach 3-28) beat West Indies 117 (Hetmyer 34, Bumrah 6-27, Shami 2-34) and 210 (Brooks 50, Holder 39, Blackwood 38, Shami 3-58, Jadeja 3-65) by 257 runs
