CALYPSONIAN Explainer has died at the age of 74.
The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (TUCO) made the announcement on a Facebook post at 3.30 pm on Friday.
It stated, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of composer, calypso extraordinaire, icon and father, Winston “Explainer” Henry who departed this life, today October 7, 2022.”
Henry was born on November 13, 1947, and grew up in San Juan. He is the father of three children Wendell, Stageann and Winston.
Explainer began his professional career in 1969. His career spanned 43 years. He composed songs about social ills. Popular ones included Ras Mass and Lorraine. He won Classic Song of the Year at the Copyright Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago (COTT) Awards for Lorraine in 1982.
In 2018, he received the Hummingbird Medal-Gold National Award for his contribution to the cultural art form.
Explainer has also collaborated with Bunji Garlin, Blaxx, Maximus Dan and Farmer Nappy.
He performed in Europe, North America, South America and throughout the Caribbean.
TUCO stated that Explainer was last attached to Kaiso House Calypso Tent and was a member of the TUCO calypso monarch adjudication committee.
