Euro 2024 Match Day 3 June 16, 2024
England 1 secures a win over Serbia 0
By Gerald Lutchman
England began their quest with a 1-0 win over Serbia, thanks to the header from star player Jude Bellingham in the 13th minute.
Serbia were not a pushover and made England work for the win. England had three shots on goal compared to the one by Serbia along with 54% of the possession.
England are searching for their first major trophy since 1966. Fan violence showed its shameful head with the arrest of seven Serbian nationals in the west city of Gelsenkirchen in a bloody clash with police.
England looked unsettled on several occasions but in the end the desired result was achieved. The games to come against Denmark will be the true test in this group.
Denmark 1 held by Slovenia 1
Christian Ericksen 17th minute goal marked his return to the Euros with a special goal but Slovenia’s Erik Janza’s in the 77th to secured a point.
Slovenia had a very vociferous fan base in Stuttgart. This is a blow to Denmark who were hoping to secure all the points.
The story was about Ericksen’s return and he was by far the best player in the game but his return was not perfect as the points were shared. Denmark were dominant with 68% of the possession and 657 passes compared to Slovenia with only 311 completed passes.
In the third game of Euro 2020 between Denmark and Finland on June 12, 2020, Eriksen collapsed on the field after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Netherlands 2 came back to defeat Poland 1
Super sub Wout Weghorst scored a late winner for Holland and gave them all the points after they were forced to come from behind.
Adam Buksa’s (16th) header opened the scoring and shocked the Dutch. Cody Gakpo (29th) equalised via a big deflection and Holland were back into the game.
The game was determined by the bench and Holland had the depth to bring on players that could change the game. Weghorst’s introduction changed the game in Holland’s favor with a determined
strike.
All the points are needed because games against France and Austria are to come.
