NO decision has been made regarding the discontinuation of restorative justice practices in schools.
The Ministry of Education stated on Saturday, “Restorative justice remains in effect in the schools where it has been implemented and no personnel involved in these initiatives have been terminated.”

The statement was sent to AZP News by Education Minister Dr Michael Dowlath when asked about statements made by former education minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly.
Dr Gadsby-Dolly had asked Dr Dowlath to state whether the Restorative Practices Initiative in schools which was launched in 11 schools in 2023 was discontinued.
“The Minister should confirm whether this allegation is true, and whether trained professionals who were helping students with anger management and conflict resolution are, in fact, now facing termination,” she said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

The Ministry of Education stated, “The measures recently announced by the honourable prime minister are in response to the growing incidence and severity of indiscipline in schools. These initiatives are not intended to replace existing interventions such as restorative practices, but rather to complement and strengthen the ministry’s overall strategy for promoting safe and supportive school environments.”
As part of its mandate to ensure the well-being of all students and staff, the Ministry of Education stated it was currently engaged in a comprehensive review of all strategies being used to address school indiscipline.

This includes assessing what is working well and identifying areas where additional support or new approaches may be necessary.
“The ministry remains committed to fostering a holistic, inclusive, and disciplined learning environment for all students across Trinidad and Tobago,” the ministry stated.
