NEWLY-elected President of the Senate Nigel De Freitas says he is “humbled and grateful” to be in his new position.
In a Facebook post shortly after his appointment on Wednesday, de Freitas said, “To my Senatorial colleagues that have placed confidence in me, I wish to say a heartfelt thank you and I look forward to working with each and everyone towards the maintenance of the highest standards of debate that the Senate is accustomed too.”
He thanked Minister of Agriculture Land and Fisheries Kazim Hosein and minister in that ministry Avinash Singh.
De Freitas was a Minster in the Minister of Agriculture Land and Fisheries for the past ten months before being elected Senate President.
He said, “To my former personal staff, my gratitude is overwhelming for the support you provided to me as we all grew into our respective roles.
“Lastly to my wife, your continued support makes all of this possible. Your love is the bedrock upon which our success is built. I am but half of a whole ordained by God. To him we are forever grateful.”
He said in 2015 he was the youngest Vice-President of the Senate in the history of Trinidad and Tobago.
De Freitas added, “In 2023 I am thankful once again for the opportunity to serve as the first Tobagonian and youngest President of the Senate in the history of Trinidad and Tobago.
“I endeavor to serve to the best of my ability as I know all too well an opportunity to serve is an opportunity to learn.”
