Chow Remembered as ‘Giant’ in Media

TRIBUTES were paid in the Senate to former media manager Alwin Chow who passed away in New York last month.

Tributes came from both sides of the Upper House with many praising him for his stellar contribution to journalism and parliament.

Chow, the husband of former Miss Universe Janelle “Penny” Commissiong, died in New York on December 9.

A former independent senator, he was also the managing director of Guardian, a former general manager of the Express and was an advocate for the development of the city of Port-of-Spain.

Opposition Senator Wade Mark led off in the tributes.

He offered condolences on behalf of the Opposition United National Congress (UNC).

Mark said, “A son of the soil, a gentleman and an individual who made and recorded sterling contributions he made as a senator. May his soul rest in peace.”

Government Senator Laurel Lezama Lee-Sing described Chow as a giant in the media industry.

She said, “His was a tremendous contribution on the national landscape. On behalf of the government and the People’s National Movement (PNM), we extend sincerest condolences to his wife, to his adopted daughter Sasha and to his entire family. We thank them for letting his light shine on Trinidad and Tobago.”

Independent senator Paul Richards said Chow held fast to his media beliefs that as the Fourth Estate, it was an important pillar for development for Trinidad and Tobago.

Senate President Christine Kangaloo said the tributes made added invaluable reflections on Chow’s life.
