ANYONE going to Ukraine to fight in the war against Russia will be going into a nightmare says Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Amery Browne.

He said it would be too risky as Ukraine continues to battle Russian forces and he is advising anyone against such decisions.

Dr Browne on Monday at a press conference was asked about nationals volunteering to fight in the war.

He responded that the ministry was currently seeking some further information on the development.

Business consultant and activist Brian Stone has applied to become a volunteer in the war, fighting on Ukrainian grounds.

Dr Browne said, “We have nationals from this country in the past who went overseas as mercenaries to fight wars in other jurisdictions and that is currently an international conundrum. A nightmare for some of these individuals in the host countries.

“I would not want to say more on this topic, I certainly would not be saying anything to encourage that type of potential grandstanding. All I can do is sound a note of caution for the good sense and welfare and the physical wellbeing of all our nationals and encourage persons not to take bad example from those who might wish to be reckless who might wish to be in some sort of populist agenda which could put themselves and even our national reputation in jeopardy.”

“Nothing that I have heard is encouraging or would suggest that this is something that our citizens should applaud or encourage or motivate in any way shape or form,” Dr Browne added.
