THE 2023 Chutney Soca Monarch will be dedicated in memory of the late Anil Bheem who passed suddenly last Saturday.
Southex in a media release on Wednesday stated that the competition at Skinner Park, San Fernando, on February 17 (Carnival Friday), will still feature images of Bheem.
“The opening will still surround Anil Bheem as we find a unique way to honor his legendary but short career,” Southex stated.
Defending champion, GI Beharry, will compete against 12 other finalists including his niece eight-year-old Katelin Sultan.
The death of Bheem is a blow to the local music industry. He passed away at his Curepe home during the wee hours of Saturday after performing on Friday night. He had complained of felling unwell.
With his funeral set for 9 am on Thursday at the Divali Nagar site in Chaguanas, tributes continue pour in for the man who touched the lives of many with his musical gift, many sharing their support on social media. Click here for link of live stream of funeral.
Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar posted on Facebook, “It is with deep sadness I offer condolences to the friends and family of Anil Bheem. With yet another blow to the local music industry, Anil has left us with a hole in our hearts as he was a household name within our nation.
“I recognize his enormous contributions to our local culture and his efforts in placing T&T on the international stage. He will be forever missed. May he rest in peace.”
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts also issued condolences.
Chutney star Rikki Jai shared memories of him and Bheem, one in particular sharing a stage for a birthday party in August 2022.
“As usual his performance was par excellent and then he introduced me to the stage and as usual I reminded him he was the greatest Bollywood singer I knew, just born on the wrong side of the world. Always a pleasure sharing the stage with him on many different occasions. Sleep now in peace “Bheemer,” Jai posted on his Facebook page.
Chutney singer Nisha Bissambhar also expressed shock and condolences, along with others in the industry.
Pundit Satyanand Maharaj recalled the first time, he met Bheem back in 2002 who gave him the best advice he ever heard about programming for radio and over the years that followed, shared a stage and puja (Hindu prayers) with him.
He said, “Anil was a creative and passionate soul who held opinions on everything under the sun and was never shy to say his piece. His vocal genius was unmatched. I can hear his voice even now. No need to add effects. He could stand still and sing and his voice had you swaying.”
“Anil Bheem, The Vocalist, you will be missed. You have left this world better than you found it, may Shree Krishna guide you safely into the hereafter. Condolences to your family, friends and fans. Live on in your songs my friend, Bole Bole Hanuman,” Maharaj said.
