A BELMONT man has been charged with the murder of Shawndell Thomas which occurred earlier this month.
Akeel Murrell aka “Ants” was expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate charged with the offence.
Murrel, 46, of Belle Eau Road, was charged with the offence following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC, on Wednesday, a release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) stated.
He was charged by PC Wilson, of HBI Region One.
Police reports are that Thomas, aka “Froggy”, 26, of St Barb’s Road, Belmont, was walking in the district on October 3, when he approached a group of men and allegedly became verbally and physically abusive toward one of them.
During the altercation, the victim allegedly pushed the man into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The car avoided coming into contact with the man, who then allegedly stabbed the victim.
The victim was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital for treatment where he subsequently died on October 4.
Murrell surrendered himself to officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), Region One, on October 6.
Investigations were supervised by acting ASP Simon, Insp Lynch and Mongroo and acting Cpl Jules, all of the HBI Region One.
