Akeem Stewart Takes Gold in the Discus at Parapan

LIMA – TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Akeem Stew­art successfully defends his gold in the men’s F64 discus event at the Para­pan Amer­i­can Games in Pe­ru on Tuesday.

It was TT’s second medal at the games in the Ath­let­ics Sta­di­um in the Na­tion­al Sport­ing Vil­lage, Li­ma.

On Sun­day, Nyoshia Cain-Clax­ton won bronze in the women’s 200 me­tres.

Stew­art, who com­petes in the F43 class, threw to vic­to­ry in the fourth round of the dis­cus with a dis­tance of 63.70m.

It was a new record, beating the World and Pan Amer­i­can F43 one of 63.03, he himself set at the Para­pan Games in Toron­to, Cana­da in 2015.

Stew­art’s clos­est chal­lenger was Amer­i­can Je­re­my Camp­bell (F64), who had a huge sec­ond throw of 62.92m, to place second. Third was Cuba’s Ger­dan Fon­se­ca Bernal (F64) with a sea­son’s best 44.34m.

On Wednesday, the To­ba­go-born ath­lete participates in the F64 javelin.
