LIMA – TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Akeem Stewart successfully defends his gold in the men’s F64 discus event at the Parapan American Games in Peru on Tuesday.
It was TT’s second medal at the games in the Athletics Stadium in the National Sporting Village, Lima.
On Sunday, Nyoshia Cain-Claxton won bronze in the women’s 200 metres.
Stewart, who competes in the F43 class, threw to victory in the fourth round of the discus with a distance of 63.70m.
It was a new record, beating the World and Pan American F43 one of 63.03, he himself set at the Parapan Games in Toronto, Canada in 2015.
Stewart’s closest challenger was American Jeremy Campbell (F64), who had a huge second throw of 62.92m, to place second. Third was Cuba’s Gerdan Fonseca Bernal (F64) with a season’s best 44.34m.
On Wednesday, the Tobago-born athlete participates in the F64 javelin.
