A Publicity Stunt: PM’s Trip to Europe

AS Budget day approaches, citizens are waiting with bated breath to see if it will ease their suffering and the stranglehold on them. Will it deliver something substantial that would help the citizens instead of putting more pressure on them is the main question.

Dr Rowley’s recent “energy trip” may have just been a publicity stunt to show they are doing something positive in the energy sector so as to placate the masses and say something for the 2022 budget.

The energy industry in Trinidad and Tobago has been in a slump for the last seven years since the Rowley’s administration took control of it and it hasn’t produced any major sources of revenue for some time. The Government’s track record on energy and deriving profits from it has been littered with one catastrophe after another starting with the closure of Petrotrin to investing in the Atlantic LNG Train 1 that wasn’t advisable and how they have mismanaged resources over the past seven years is just horrendous.

All citizens are waiting to see whether the Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley’s seven-day trip to Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom and Holland was profitable for the nation or if it was just another publicity stunt.

The Budget day is carded on September 26. When you examine the performance of the energy sector over the last seven years under this Government, it leaves everyone wondering why exactly we closed down Petrotrin, destroying so many lives of people who depended on it and especially now that refineries are making five times what they were before the Russia invasion of Ukraine. Refineries are in high demand now and it seems that it was just a very bad choice by our leadership.

No sound answers have been forthcoming for the real reason for the shutdown and we must ask the prime minister why he wanted to go with Proman to visit one of their facilities in Switzerland while Proman already has so many facilities (14 facilities) at the Point Lisas Industrial Estate.

What is the reason for going to Switzerland at this time when it wasn’t scheduled at all and how come the minister of energy and the PM went to Germany also to check out a Proman plant?

Really what is the reason? It leaves one to speculate if there are some backdoor deals being negotiated under the current administration to sell off all of the CLICO’s assets in the methanol plant at Point Lisas.

Was this visit by the prime minister to Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom and Holland so important right now and will it bring new investments to the energy sector in TNT? Especially now where we seem to have a national security crisis and the killing spree of citizens continue unabated. Wouldn’t a zoom meeting serve the purpose just as easily saving hundreds of thousands of dollars?
