A PRISONER at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca was killed on Saturday when gang violence broke out at the prison.
DCP Intelligence and Investigations, Suzette Martin confirmed the incident in a media release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) on Saturday evening.
When the violence broke out, the Prison Department responded swiftly to the situation after receiving reports of unrest inside the facility assisting Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service officers on duty.

The TTPS also responded lending standby support as the prison officers regained control and restored order.
The release stated, “Despite efforts to de-escalate the situation, one male inmate sustained multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after. Following formal identification and notification of his family, the identity of the deceased inmate will be released.”
A full-scale investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the violence and those responsible will be held accountable, the TTPS stated.
DCP Suzette Martin said, “This is a deeply troubling incident. The safety and security at all prison facilities across Trinidad and Tobago is a matter of national concern, and we are working closely with the Prison Service to prevent any recurrence. My thoughts are with the family of the deceased and all those affected.”
Additional police officers remain on-site as the investigation continues, while prison remains on lockdown.
The public will be updated as more information becomes available, the TTPS stated.
Earlier this week, the TTPS informed the public that a 9mm pistol, 10 improvised weapons and seven cell phones were discovered at the prison.
