GROS ISLET, Saint Lucia -The Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has announced that Denis O’Brien has taken full ownership of Cricket Sporting Investments Limited (CSIL), the holding company responsible for operating the CPL.
This development follows a comprehensive sales process conducted by Digicel Group Holdings Limited (DGHL), the tournament’s former majority shareholder.
DGHL and its independent directors, along with advisors Oakwell Sports Advisory, oversaw the sales process to divest its interests in CSIL.
Richard Bevan OBE, Chairman of the CPL, expressed his enthusiasm for the league’s growth and future. “It has been fantastic to watch the CPL grow over the last few years, becoming the best-attended sporting event in the region. Denis’s full ownership ensures continuity and support for the management team. We are eager to work closely with Cricket West Indies (CWI) President Dr Kishore Shallow, the CWI board, and other stakeholders to create new opportunities for the extraordinary cricketing talent in the Caribbean.”
O’Brien shared his passion for the region and the CPL’s impact. “I have a deep love for the Caribbean and its people, and it’s thrilling to see how the CPL unites local communities. I am committed to ensuring the tournament continues to make a positive economic and cultural impact in the host countries while serving as a platform to develop future cricket stars and shine a positive light on the Caribbean.”
O’Brien’s entrepreneurial achievements span various industries, including telecoms, media, energy, leisure, and hospitality. As the founder of Digicel in 2001, he served as the company’s Chairman until January 2024 and remains a board member and significant shareholder.
Pete Russell, CEO of the Republic Bank CPL, highlighted O’Brien’s instrumental role in the league’s journey. “Denis has been integral to the CPL since its launch in 2013. His decision to take full ownership underscores his faith in the future of cricket in the Caribbean and the vital role CPL will play in that future.” (CMC)
