MANCHESTER United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following a disappointing start to the season.
The decision came after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham, which left the team languishing in 14th place in the Premier League with only three wins from their first nine matches.
The team’s struggles extend to the Europa League, where they currently sit 21st out of 36 teams after drawing their first three fixtures.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined the club as Ten Hag’s assistant last summer, has been appointed as interim manager. The club announced that Van Nistelrooy will lead the team “while a permanent head coach is recruited.”
Ten Hag was notified of the board’s decision on Monday morning, following the loss at the London Stadium.
Despite triggering a one-year extension in his contract after winning the FA Cup final against Manchester City in May, his tenure was cut short due to United’s poor performance, marking their second-worst start in a Premier League season.
The club is now in search of its sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
A statement from the club read:
“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.
“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
