Family Life Key to Fighting Crime – Persad-Bissessar

OPPOSITION Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says moral decay and rising crime rates are due to the breakdown of family life.

She stressed the crucial role of parents and guardians in transforming families into safe havens for children.

Persad-Bissessar was speaking at the Divali Nagar celebrations in Chaguanas on Saturday night,

Persad-Bissessar said modern challenges, such as the pervasive influence of digital technology, have diminished the quality time parents spend with their children, impacting the imparting of essential values. She stressed the importance of confronting environmental challenges that children face, including drug abuse, peer pressure, and bullying.

“The world today is a cruel and harsh place,” she stated, advocating for families to serve as sanctuaries where children can express themselves and learn moral and spiritual values.

She urged parents to be more present and vigilant in their children’s lives, addressing the increase in heinous crimes affecting the youth.

Persad-Bissessar lamented the pervasive bloodshed infiltrating homes and called for collective courage and determination to address these critical issues.

Persad-Bissessar also paid tribute to the late Deokienanan Sharma, celebrating his contributions to Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural and social fabric as head of the NCIC.
