THE Ministry of Works and Transport states that the Bridal Road Bridge in Cunupia is 95% completed.

It stated in a release on Monday, the first day of the new school term, after a viral video and other reports showed that the road leading to the bridge was breaking up.

The bridge was opened on Friday.

It stated, “These statements create a misleading narrative of the Ministry’s rigorous standard of certification of its infrastructural projects, which can cause unnecessary panic and fear.”

The ministry stated that before the official opening of the Bridal Road Bridge on August 30, 2024, its Programme for Upgrading Roads Efficiency (PURE) Unit was aware that the project was 95% complete and additional works were still needed. Similarly, the Highways Division is currently conducting ancillary works at the Perseverance Road Bridge site.

Recognising the urgent need for improved access and connectivity, particularly with the start of the new school term, the ministry decided to open the bridges to the public, the release stated.

It stated that both the PURE Unit and the Highways Division will continue necessary work to ensure that the bridges are fully completed.

The ministry also reminded motorists of the weight limit on the Perseverance Road Bridge, which is currently restricted to light vehicles only, with a maximum weight limit of five tonnes.
