Young Acts as PM for First Time

MINISTER of Energy and Energy Industries Stuart Young, SC, has been appointed as the acting Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley left for Grenada on Sunday to attend the 47th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (Caricom).

Acting as prime minister for the first time in his career, Young will hold the reins of leadership until Dr Rowley’s return to the country, the release from the Office of the Prime Minister stated on Sunday. The exact timeline of Dr Rowley’s return was not specified.

According to the release, Dr Rowley left for St George’s, Grenada, to participate in the important regional summit chaired by Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell. Joining Dr Rowley are Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs Dr. Amery Browne and Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Reginald Armour, SC.

The Caricom meeting is set to address critical issues such as the Caricom Single Market and Economy, climate change and sustainable development, agri-food and nutrition security, as well as the repercussions of Hurricane Beryl on the region. Discussions on these topics are expected to shape the future course of regional cooperation and development.

Young’s appointment was also lauded by the National Women’s League of the People’s National Movement (PNM.

It stated, “We note with pride that it is the distinguished chairman of our party who has been entrusted with this crucial responsibility.
