CHAGUANAS West MP Dinesh Rambally wants to know what criteria Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley used in extending the term of Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher for a second time.
In a statement on Tuesday, he said he was disappointed by the “reckless decision” made by Dr Rowley to extend the service of the top cop by one year.
Rambally said the decision epitomises the prime minister’s disregard for the safety and security of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
He said, “As the saying goes, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and again and expecting a different result each time. By extending the term of a Commissioner of Police who has categorically failed to stem the ongoing violent crime wave, Dr Rowley is saying to the nation that he is either insane or wants the current crime epidemic to get worse.
“I demand to know from Prime Minister Rowley: what criteria was used to justify this decision? Or was this yet another arbitrary action taken without any consideration for the well-being of our nation? By extending the service of Commissioner Harewood, Prime Minister Rowley has effectively signaled his acceptance of the status quo – a status quo where crime continues to spiral out of control.
“By refusing to implement meaningful changes and by perpetuating the tenure of a Commissioner who has failed to curb crime, Prime Minister Rowley is complicit in allowing crime to flourish in our society. If you do not actively seek change, you are actively supporting failure.
“I call on Prime Minister Rowley as Head of the National Security Council to immediately account to the public for this misguided decision and to prioritise the safety and security of all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. We cannot afford to tolerate any further negligence or incompetence from his Government. Your time of inaction must come to an end.”
