FORMER head of the public service and diplomat Reginald Dumas has passed away at the age of 88 on Thursday.
His death was confirmed by his daughter, who revealed that Dumas had been facing an extended challenge of gastrointestinal failure over the past few weeks at the Scarborough General Hospital.
Dumas’s career spanned various diplomatic including the Ambassador to the United States of America and Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the Organization of American States (OAS)High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, High Commissioner to Canada, High Commissioner to India (with accreditation to Sri Lanka, Singapore, Indonesia, and Japan), and High Commissioner to Ethiopia (with accreditation to Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia).
In 1998, Dumas co-founded the Trinidad and Tobago Transparency Institute, the National Chapter of Transparency International, showcasing his commitment to transparency and good governance.
THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine described Dumas as a steady advocate for Tobago, highlighting that his legacy and influence will endure as a source of encouragement and inspiration.
As a member of the Tobago Council of Elders, Reginald Dumas played a pivotal role in shaping the island’s development, he said.
A release on Friday from the Office of the Prime Minister stated, “The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago joins with the Nation in mourning the passing of Diplomat, Writer and outstanding Public Servant, Reginald Dumas.
“Mr. Dumas dedicated his life to the service of our country both here and abroad. Having served for over 30 years in the Public Service, he rose through merit to the position of Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister and Head of the Public Service.”
